Hey guys! My name is Sia and I am a 25 year old former nurse, but now work-at-home mommy & wifey and diet/fitnesse entrepreneur.
One of the most common emails I get is to spill my weight loss success story. Before I changed my lifestyle back in 2010, I was pretty much like anyone else. I worked and was in nursing school so I was hardly ever home-which lead to my unexpected weight gain! My favorite was to drive-thru Burger King and order two junior whoppers with cheese. I fed my body with nothing but junk because it was convenient and I had thought it tasted good. This went on for a few years and I noticed my body evolving. Cellulite appeared. My jeans size went up. I jiggled. I was simply a “puffier” version of myself. I was content until I had realized the damage I was doing to my insides.
It all started when a friend introduced me to a documentary called FOOD INC. She urged me to watch it. I figured sure, why not? Little did I know, this documentary led to some pretty huge life changes. I was disgusted by what I saw. Shocked. Horrified. How often do you think about what you eat? I never did! Think about it. Do you know exactly WHERE your food comes from? The hormones they put into meat? The pesticides they use on fruits and veggies?
I was so appalled that I made a clean eating organic shopping list and went straight to the Fresh Market. I started reading labels for the first time ever. I educated myself on what was considered clean and what wasn’t. I explored new food options and learned new terms that I had never even heard of! It was honestly confusing, but as I taught myself more and more, I became obsessed! I enjoyed it so much!
It was difficult to make the lifestyle change in the beginning as I would still slip up here and there. But I made small changes which lead to bigger changes, and I gave it my all. Soon enough, healthy became a habit and not a chore. I started planning my meals thoroughly and eating every couple of hours. I ate more fruits and veggies than I ever had (fruit was my number one snack). I ditched sugary carbs and aimed for high protein meals.
Over the course of 9 months, I lost almost 45lbs. Because I lost it the slow and steady way, it stayed off and has never come back. A majority of the weight was lost in my thighs, hips, and booty. I never had a “tummy” to begin with, but it had never been defined-until I ate clean.
Aside from FOOD INC, I have to give lots of credit to FOOD BABE for helping me along the way. Her website is filled with tons of great information that bashes our rose colored glasses from seeing the truth. She opens up a can of reality and exposes the truth that companies strive to hide. Thanks, Vani!
My husband and I knew we wanted children-and lots of them-pretty soon. After 6 months of marriage, we tried to conceive with great luck after only two months. I continued to stay in shape during pregnancy by 5 a day workouts and a clean diet.
Staying fit during pregnancy was indeed a big challenge-not gonna lie. I did have cravings and I did indulge in a cheat meal or two during my second trimester. However, I pushed through and did what I had to do to stay fit and to make sure my baby was getting the nutrients he needed. I gained 30 lbs total and gave birth to an 8 lb. 7 oz. beautiful baby boy after going into labor on my due date.
On Febuary 4th, I gave birth and it was the most remarkable experience of my life. Though my body will never be the exact same, I am so happy about what it’s done to create life and the strides that I have taken to improve my postpartum body.
I have been pretty fit for most of my life and during pregnancy I turned that notch up even higher. I was at the gym 5 days per week for one hour (even if it meant waking up at 5:30am to get my gym hour in before starting my full time nursing job at 8am) and I ate pretty clean for the most part. I did have my little indlugences here and there; specically, during my second trimester when all I wanted was chips & queso from Tijuana Flats!
Once I gave birth, my world was turned upside down! I was so used to being on a schedule, but then I realize that the schedule that I once had was simply not going to work anymore-I was on my son’s time. But hey, I wouldn’t have had it any other way! However, this meant that I had to create a new plan of attack.
Shortly after I had given birth, I lost the 30lbs that I had gained during pregnancy, but my body was still soft and the definition that I once had was far from sight. I didn’t start working out hardcore till around 12 weeks postpartum, though I was given the clear at six weeks. Why? Life got in the way: my husband had to have surgery, we had to make a 9 hour trip to his hometown for a family emergency, and then we decided to move into a bigger home. As you can see, working out was the last thing on my mind.
Once things finally settled down, I created a home gym consisting of an ab bench, two medicine balls, a battle rope, a fitness ball, two kettlebells, a dumbbell, resistance bands, and yoga mats and I created a plan. Since I knew the gym was not an option anymore, I decided to improvise and workout from home as my son slept. But… as you can imagine, even that did not always go according to plan.
So, what did I do? I incorporated him into my workouts! This way, I killed two birds with one stone and we had a blast, together, and I toned up slowly, but surely. I even take him out for runs in our jogging stroller and even created a stroller workout! I have learned that when you are crunched for time, you must get creative.
He enjoys watching and learning, but sometimes I will even incorporate him into my yoga days. I am still currently breastfeeding today and I try to improvise even when little one gets hungry. Multi-tasking is a mom’s best friend! And this is pretty much it. I believe that diet is 75% of why I look the way I do. I eat clean most of the time-though, yes, I am human and I like a glass of wine or a beer every now and then. I also love BREAD. Ah! It’s the devil! So I try to stay away. I have really good willpower that I have developed over the years luckily. If you tweak your diet, you will be amazed at how much better your body can get.
It is easy to get discouraged sometimes, especially after giving birth and when your world is turned upside down. But, if you do your best and use your free time wisely, you won’t regret it!
Always remember: NEVER GIVE UP!
