Woman success story :) Picture on left was taken when my son was 2 years old. At that time I only had time to do cardio with a little toddler and a business to run. I ran 5 miles every other day but as a trainer myself, I knew that I had lost some muscle and needed to lift again. Sadly as many of you moms (and dads) know, there is only 24 hours in a day and when you spend most of those 24 hrs running around, tending to your young one(s), working, all while being sleep deprived, it’s hard to find time for yourself. And when you do find the time, you just want to sleep! Slowly as my son got less dependent on me, I was able to spend more time on me, workouts in the gym and finally got control of my body again. I was fit before having been a trainer since my early 20’s, so I had no doubt that I would get it back. I knew that it would take time. With a little improvement each day, I knew I would get there. So don’t give up. Take away all your doubts and SEE yourself getting to your goals. Yes it can get frustrating because sometimes we cannot control all things. But one thing is for sure – YOU CONTROL YOU. So make it happen, make 2015 epic. Are you ready? Let’s make it happen.
I’ve been in the fitness industry most of my life and never truly understood what it felt like to be a little overweight until I got pregnant. I gained 50 lbs in 2007 during my pregnancy. I was 37 when I had my son. It took about a year to get most of the weight off and as you can see in the pic on the left from 2011, i managed to get back to a healthy weight and maintain. However, I definitely was not the same compared to my pre pregnancy body. I was still holding on to about 15lbs even 4 years post prego. It wasn’t until I really started focusing on what I was preaching my clients “80% of your success is determined by your nutrition”. Being so focused on my new baby’s nutrition and care, I neglected mine. So in 2011 I embraced the opportunity to get back to where I was as I had all the tools, I knew what to do…I just needed to JUST DO IT. Today almost 7 years post pregnancy, I am healthier and more fit than before. So if you’ve been here, you CAN DO IT with a some education and tons of determination, focus and perseverance. Never say you can’t!!!
2012 on the left when I barely lifted and mostly ran for a workout. As a trainer, I am obviously an advocate of the many benefits of lifting. I had been lifting all my life but when I gave birth in 2007, being a new mom left me with only time for short workouts. So I chose running over lifting coz it was quick and easy. All I had to do was put the baby in my running stroller and away we went! Well, the pictures speak for themselves. Luckily muscles have memory and once I started back lifting the fall of 2012, it didn’t take long for my muscles to come back. That’s me on the right this past October at the @musclesportproduction San Francisco Championships. Today, I still run for leisure but my choice of cardio is HIGH RESISTANCE CARDIO. That is, double stepping on stairs, treadmill fast walking at minimum 15% incline 3mph, ellipticals at a high level and biking also at high resistance or uphill. This high resistance cardio not only burns more calories, but it makes your muscles work harder than no resistance. Therefore you get a more sculpted, toned lower body. So don’t waste your time “spinning at the wheel” with no resistance, put some elbow grease into it.
Who’s 44??? Yup I am :) In addition to competing in masters, I compete and place in open bikini with ladies half my age. I’ve been lucky to have adopted a healthy and fit lifestyle since my teens due to track. Then just never stopped and continued into my adult life. I have been sharing this lifestyle with others since 1992. Now being a mommy and a family to raise, health is even more of a priority. With that said, I will also say that it’s never too late to start and you can reverse the clock and always improve your health foremost. Just look at some of my clients like @charityvandyke who is 42, @liletdugan 51, and if you scroll down my posts you will see Ginny who is 57 and all of them just started competing in bikini competitions this year! They are amazing inspirations that you can start NOW! The key is to always remember that health is a priority in ALL we do. Without it we have nothing. No trophy, no money, nothing is more important than our health and the health of our family and loved ones. Health is wealth.
Quality time in the Caribbean with my family. As much as I post mostly my fitness life, as it is my livelihood, it comes second to my family. Family first, always. The “original” Team Berger my husband of 15 years @mitchhawaii808 and our 7 year old son. Our 10 year old sheltie @starrhawaii is the only one missing who is back home in Hawaii. Enjoy each day with the ones closest to your heart. Life is too short not to. Aloha from my family to yours.
My booty transformation in 12 weeks. I worked lower body twice a week doing 4-5 sets at moderate to heavy weights. Your body needs time to repair and grow stronger with each session, so I kept it to twice a week only for optimal recovery. I switched out some of my low resistance cardio like running to high resistance cardio (double stepping on stepmill and super high resistance on octane elliptical like at least level 12). 12 weeks of consistency and the pictures speak for themselves. Stay focused and keep on it.

Such an amazing feeling watching this video as I practiced my posing in my hotel room the day before my last national competition. Watching it gets me all pumped for the next season. Perfection is an intangible. Only progress is real. Strive for better each and every day. 2015 is going to be epic. Aloha from Hawaii.
